How To Become A Transformational Leader Through Reinvention
“The only constant in life is change.” — Heraclitus
Leadership is not a fixed state. It is a journey of learning, growing, and making intentional changes. Reinvention is a big part of this journey, the decision to adapt, improve, and work toward a bigger purpose.
Reinvention doesn’t mean starting over or forgetting who you are. It means building on your experiences, using your strengths, and choosing a new direction to create positive change. It helps you face challenges, find new meaning in your work, and make a real difference.
As fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, we are guided by the belief that effective enlightened leaders are not born but made. Like anything else, they are made through hard work and dedication. Reinvention plays a big role in this process; it is never too early or late to start. Let me share how this belief shaped my journey and how it can inspire yours.
A Personal Journey of Reinvention
In 2021, I was at the top of my game as a writer at Opera News. I consistently ranked among the top three for clicks and engagement on a team of over 35 writers, covering politics, metro, and sports news. My work stood out, and I was recognized for it — so much so that I had two exciting offers. One came from a major newspaper company, where I could follow in my late father’s footsteps. He had worked there for over a decade, and as a child, I had dreamed of joining the company. The other offer came from Heroshe, a logistics firm presenting a new challenge: B2B content creation.
The decision wasn’t easy. The newspaper company would mean becoming a proper journalist, but Heroshe offered me a chance to enter a new field. I chose Heroshe, but the transition wasn’t as smooth as I’d hoped. The first month was a struggle. Writing for a B2B audience was completely different from the fast-paced world of news reporting. I had to learn how to tailor my writing to a business audience, integrate SEO and keyword strategies, and understand the importance of UX writing and data analysis. Instead of letting the challenges overwhelm me, I decided to dive in headfirst. I took many Udemy and Coursera courses, read everything I could, and sought out mentors like Akintoye Alao, who guided me through the basics of B2B marketing.
Today, I am a full-stack B2B and B2C marketer with experience across logistics, e-commerce, fintech, and investment. I take pride in my work with disruptive companies like Careers24, Heroshe, AXA Mansard, and Kong Marketing, where my contributions have generated millions of digital impressions, brand mentions, and significant sales conversions.
All these experiences led me to the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, where I am learning that I have more aspects to myself than I realized. I am now working on reinventing myself to become a better version of myself, both as a leader and an individual.
How to Embrace Reinvention as a Leader
Here are some important steps to help you become a transformational leader through reinvention:
Reflect on Your Purpose: Take time to think about what truly matters to you. Ask yourself: What do I care about most? What kind of leader do I want to be? What legacy do I want to leave behind? Understanding your purpose will give you a clear direction as you reinvent yourself and guide your leadership decisions.
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, is a great example of someone who has always stayed true to his purpose. He started with a small cement business, but his clear vision to improve infrastructure and create jobs in Nigeria has helped him build a multi-billion-dollar empire. His focus on his purpose has helped him become one of Africa’s most influential business leaders.
Commit to Continuous Learning: Reinvention is an ongoing process. As a leader, always look for new ways to grow. Take courses, find mentors, and explore experiences that challenge your thinking. Embrace learning as a way to stretch your leadership abilities and stay open to change. The more you learn, the more you can improve and adapt.
In the closing of our first ALIWA seminar, Mrs. Omobola Johnson emphasized that continuous learning is the hallmark of an effective, enlightened leader. She urged us (as I am urging you) to pursue knowledge about everything. This will help broaden your perspective and help you identify solutions to problems you might not recognize.
Adapt to Change with Resilience: Leadership means being able to handle change. Instead of fearing it, see change as a chance to learn and grow. Stay flexible and strong when things don’t go as planned. Keep adjusting your leadership to match new challenges and opportunities. This will help you stay on track even when things change around you.
Tony Elumelu, the founder of Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation, has demonstrated strong leadership and resilience. He helped transform the banking sector with UBA and now focuses on supporting African entrepreneurs through his foundation. Elumelu has adapted to the changing economy and remains committed to promoting long-term growth for Africa.
Act with Integrity: Reinvention is about staying true to your values. As you evolve, ensure your actions reflect honesty, kindness, and a commitment to helping others. Whether making decisions or leading a team, always act with integrity. Your values should guide you no matter what changes around you.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is a leader known for her integrity and commitment to public service. She has made decisions based on transparency and fairness throughout her career, advocating for economic reforms that benefit all Nigerians and Africans. Her leadership in the World Bank and her work in Nigeria’s finance ministry highlight her dedication to doing what’s right, even in challenging situations.
Inspire Others Through Your Journey: Great leaders don’t just change themselves — they inspire others to do the same. Share your story openly, showing both the struggles and successes. When you show your growth, others will feel encouraged to grow. Your example can motivate those around you to take on challenges and think in new ways.
Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi is a leader who inspires by sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience. As the Executive Director of Stand to End Rape Initiative (STER), she has challenged social barriers and fought against violence toward women and girls in Nigeria. Her work, including the #SexforGrades documentary with BBC Africa Eye and the push for the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions Bill, has sparked systemic change and inspired others to join the fight for justice.
Your Life, Your Legacy
There is no deadline for self-improvement or change. You are the author of your own story, and you can decide to rewrite it whenever you wish. Whether you want to refine the person you already are or create an entirely new path, the choice is yours.
So, take a moment to reflect on your journey. Who do you want to become? What legacy do you want to leave behind? Remember, the power to transform yourself and your leadership lies within you. So take a deep breath, believe in your potential, and step into the life you have always wanted.
